After six years of business in Mason County, Visscher Construction has expanded its repertoire to include solar services under the name West Michigan Solar Systems, Inc.

The sister companies recently moved to a new location at 215 S. James St., Ludington, and provide service to Mason, Manistee and Oceana counties.

“Renewable energy has always been a passion of mine, and I believe this is hands down one of the best improvements you could do to your property,” said owner Caleb Visscher.

West Michigan Solar Systems is a local installer of solar panels. Visscher is Solairgen certified for installation and design, and he partners with Michigan Saves to provide financing to customers.

“We offer full-service solar, electric vehicle charging, and battery backup systems,” Visscher said. “These are amazing in that they pay for themselves in 9-15 years and then produce power for up to 40 years — still operating at 80 percent efficiency after that long.”

Visscher provides a free roof inspection for an estimate on repair or replacement. His crew focuses on the roofing and preparation side of the business, while its partner company assists with solar panel installation.

Visscher said the highest Return on Investment for an average project on a home could be anywhere from 40-90 percent, but solar systems actually pay for themselves and can double the initial investment throughout their lifespan — and it’s environmentally friendly.

Construction Services

A graduate of Ferris State University with a degree in Building Construction Technology, Visscher started his own business in 2015.  At the time, he felt it was important to build his business on honesty, trustworthiness and reliability — and that sentiment rings true today.

Visscher Construction currently employs 17 full-time employees, and together, Caleb and his crew boast over 30 years in the construction and remodeling industry. The business specializes in custom home construction, home remodeling, insurance cases, additions, landscaping and commercial. An extensive portfolio is available online.

“I have a degree in construction technology/construction management — and while this is not required in our industry — it has been instrumental in helping us scale our business and bringing current technology into the residential market,” Visscher said.

Visscher is licensed and insured, handles insurance cases, and provides a free consultation for every potential customer. Online scheduling and access to construction information keeps the customer informed as each project progresses. The online portal provides to the client a daily log, progress photos, comments and an area to ask questions.

“Our most popular service is a design/build contract, which allows the client to hire us to help them design the house the way they want, without getting stuck in a large build contract before they are truly prepared,” he explained. “This allows them to make choices before starting construction to help avoid hidden costs or selection up-charges down the road.

“While lumber prices are slowly coming down, there is still a great deal of uncertainty about future costs. What we typically recommend is if the project is not urgent, it is probably a good idea to try holding off to let the market catch up with demand,” Visscher said. “If it is urgent, the one thing that helps offset the cost is that interest rates are still so low that, if you are using a loan, the savings from the interest rates definitely help offset the extra cost in materials.”
